Removable Dentures

Removable dentures, also known as false teeth or dental prostheses, are a type of dental restoration that replace missing teeth. These dentures are designed to be easily taken out of the mouth for cleaning and maintenance. There are two primary types of removable dentures:
  1. Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are used when all the natural teeth in the upper or lower arch are missing. They consist of a full set of artificial teeth attached to an acrylic or metal base that fits over the gums. The upper denture typically covers the palate, while the lower one is horseshoe-shaped to accommodate the tongue. Complete dentures rely on suction and the surrounding tissues for retention.
  2. Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. They consist of one or more artificial teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework. The framework may have clasps that hook onto adjacent natural teeth to help stabilize the partial denture in place.

Here are some key points about removable dentures:

  • Construction: Removable dentures are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and match the shape and color of their natural teeth. They are created by taking impressions and measurements of the oral cavity.
  • Function: Dentures serve multiple purposes, including restoring the appearance of a complete smile, improving speech, and facilitating the ability to chew food. They also help maintain the shape and structure of the face.
  • Adaptation Period: Patients may experience an adjustment period as they get used to wearing dentures. This can involve learning to speak and eat with the dentures in place.
  • Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and hygiene of removable dentures. Regular cleaning and soaking are necessary to prevent plaque buildup, staining, and odors.
  • Lifespan: Dentures have a limited lifespan, and they may need to be relined, rebased, or replaced over time due to changes in the oral tissues, wear and tear, or damage.
  • Alternative Solutions: In addition to removable dentures, other options for replacing missing teeth include dental implants, which provide a more permanent and stable solution, and fixed bridges, which are non-removable and supported by adjacent natural teeth.

The choice between removable dentures and other tooth replacement options depends on individual circumstances, such as the number of missing teeth, oral health, and patient preferences. A dentist or prosthodontist can help guide patients in selecting the most appropriate treatment for their specific needs.
